Balinality – A Very ‘Boring’ 35mm Film Photography Exhibit of Bali (Pameran Foto tentang Bali)
Behind the Balinality — Questioning Stereotypes
The dictionary says the word banal means, “So lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring.” i.e., membosankan in Bahasa Indonesia.
Some of us find beauty in the banal, which the mainstream calls ‘ugly’. Balinality, is a study of the banal found in Bali. This essay defines beauty by looking ‘the other way’. What is this other way and how does one find it?
The good news is that the obvious and boring is always hiding in plain sight. The bad news is that the banal is more often looked at yet not genuinely seen.
One way to start ‘seeing’ is by visiting a so-called Instagrammable place. Once there, point your lens in the opposite direction of everyone else’s. If you see the beauty in the banal, then you see a new universe of possibilities.
Please join us on opening night at Bubur Ayam Jakarta in Ubud, Bali on Monday 17 July.
This sounds fantastic! I’ve always been drawn towards images of the Banal, so much more
to question, inwards as well as outwards, always a quiet beauty to discover.
Really wish I could attend.
Thank you for sharing on the site! Good luck for the Opening Night!!
